When a core switch dies, the label printers, the time clocks, and the file server with all the work instructions go down together. There's the office side: email, accounting, file shares, Microsoft 365, the workstations your front office runs on. Any competent IT provider can handle that.

The most common complaint we hear from manufacturers and warehouses in northwest Ohio isn't about cybersecurity or servers. It's this: "our scanners keep disconnecting."
Here's the uncomfortable truth: it's almost never the scanners. It's the WiFi.
A warehouse or shop floor is one of the most hostile radio environments there is. Metal racking reflects and blocks signal. Forklifts and product move constantly, changing the coverage picture hour by hour. Machinery throws off electrical interference. Concrete and steel eat signal that would travel cleanly through office drywall.
Drop a few office-grade access points on the ceiling of that environment and you get exactly what you'd expect: dead zones between racks, scanners clinging to a distant access point instead of roaming to a closer one, and dropped sessions every time a worker walks a long aisle mid-transaction.
What properly designed warehouse WiFi looks like
It starts with a wireless site survey — actually measuring signal in the real environment, with the racking full, not guessing from a floor plan. Then: industrial-grade access points rated for the temperature and dust of the space, mounted and aimed for coverage at scanner height rather than office-ceiling assumptions, with roaming thresholds tuned so devices hand off cleanly between access points instead of death-gripping a weak signal.
And critically: scanners, tablets, and machine connections get their own SSIDs and VLANs, separated from office traffic and guest WiFi. Your shipping operation shouldn't compete for airtime with someone streaming a lunch break video.
OT Segmentation: Keeping Office Problems Off the Production Floor
Here's a question worth asking about your plant: if someone in the front office clicks a phishing link tomorrow, can that infection reach the machines?
For a lot of manufacturers along I-75, the honest answer is yes — because the office network and the production network are effectively one flat network. The PLCs, HMIs, and that Windows 7 box running the CNC saw are sitting right next to email and web browsing, network-wise.
OT segmentation fixes this. It means putting operational technology — machine controllers, SCADA systems, industrial sensors, legacy equipment PCs — on isolated network segments (VLANs), with firewall rules that allow only the specific traffic production actually requires, like the data flow from machines to the ERP. Everything else is blocked.
Why it matters so much in manufacturing: legacy equipment can't defend itself. That controller running an end-of-life operating system can't be patched and can't run modern endpoint protection — and replacing it means replacing a half-million-dollar machine. Segmentation is how you keep equipment like that safe and productive anyway. If something does get compromised, the blast radius is one network segment, not the whole plant.
Guest WiFi, security cameras, and building systems like HVAC and door access belong on their own segments too. The rule of thumb is simple: if it can't be patched or protected, it doesn't share a network with email.

Securing ERP and Vendor Access Without Slowing Anyone Down
Two access patterns deserve special attention in every plant we assess.
ERP access. The ERP touches everything — orders, inventory, costing, customer data. It should be protected accordingly: individual accounts per user (no shared logins taped to a monitor), role-based permissions so a shipping clerk can't touch payroll data, and multi-factor authentication on every account, especially any with remote access. None of this slows down day-to-day work; it just closes the doors that don't need to be open.
Vendor remote access. Your equipment vendors and systems integrators need to reach the machines they support — and the path of least resistance is an always-on remote access tool installed on a floor PC and forgotten. Those standing, unmonitored connections are one of the most common ways attackers walk into plant networks.
The better pattern: time-limited remote sessions, scoped to only the specific equipment that vendor supports, logged so you know who connected, when, and to what. Vendors get the access they need to keep your machines running. You keep control of who's inside your network.
Where Uptime Meets Security
Everything above — segmentation, WiFi design, access control — does double duty. It keeps production running day to day, and it dramatically shrinks your exposure to the attacks that specifically target manufacturers.
And manufacturers are specifically targeted. Ransomware operators know that a stopped production line creates enormous pressure to pay, which is exactly why manufacturing has ranked as the most-attacked industry sector for years running. Add growing supply chain pressure — OEMs and tier-one customers sending cybersecurity questionnaires and making security posture a condition of the contract — and security stops being optional even for shops that consider themselves too small to matter.

What to Look for in a Manufacturing IT Support Provider
